Shark Room

As a result of the fascination that Dom Carlos I had for deep ocean species, his collection managed to gather a remarkable set of naturalised shark specimens captured off the Portuguese coast during the oceanographic campaigns carried out between 1896 and 1907.

The exhibition explores the sophisticated biology of this group of marine animals and the high diversity of species that exists in the ocean, featuring specimens of ancient species such as the frilled shark Chlamydoselachus anguineus, rare species such as the bramble shark Echinorhinus brucus, or species that are still somewhat enigmatic today, such as the delicate basking shark Cetorhinus maximus.
