Deputy Head of the Navy Band
CAPTAIN LIEUTENANT MAESTRO MUSICIAN JOSÉ VELOSO
He was born in Lisbon, where he started his musical studies learning the clarinet with Mário Cândido Inácio Santos. In 1990, he joined the Amateur Music Academy of Lisbon and, in the same year, he was admitted at the Music School of the National Conservatory of Lisbon, in the class led by Professor Jaime Carriço. In 1991, after a public tender, he joined the Portuguese Navy Band, where he played the clarinet. In 1996, he was admitted at the Higher School of Music of Lisbon, where he studied Clarinet with Professor Manuel Jerónimo, and Chamber Music with Professors Jorge Moyano, Irene Lima, and Olga Prats. At the same time, he studied the clarinet in Portugal and abroad with professors Alois Brandhofer, Anders Aberg, among others, while collaborating with and playing in youth orchestras in the country. He also developed his teaching activity between 2000 and 2006, as a teacher at the Algarve Conservatory and the Baixo Alentejo Regional Conservatory. In recent years, he has attended several Band Conducting courses with Professors Délio Gonçalves and Jo Conjaerts, and in 2004 and 2005 he participated in the 'Corsi di Perfezionamento Musicale' of Wind Orchestra directed by Maestro Jo Conjaerts, in Spilimbergo - Italy, in which he conducted several concerts in various towns in Northern Italy. In 2005 and 2006, he studied Orchestration and Band Conducting with Professor Jo Conjaerts. In 2006, he took public examinations in the Navy Band to become Naval Musician Officer. Then he attended the Naval School's Complementary Military Officer Training Course, after which he was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant. He is currently working as a teacher and director of amateur bands. With the rank of Captain Lieutenant, José Veloso is the Deputy Head of the Navy Band. Throughout his career, Commander José Veloso has received several commendations and decorations: the 2nd Class Military Merit Medal; two Naval Cross Medals - 3rd Class, and the Military Medal for Exemplary Behaviour - Silver Grade.
