The Director

 
Captain João Ribeiro Nobre da Silva Ramos was born in Faro, on January 5, 1963, in the parish of Sé. He received his basic education at Colégio São de Brito, Lisbon, and completed his secondary education in 1981.
On 7 September, 1981, he joined the Naval Academy. He finished his Navy course in 1986, completing his internship as an Aspirant aboard the NRP Sagres.
After being promoted to Navy Guard, he served aboard the NRP Cunene as Officer in Charge and, in 1988, already as 2nd Lieutenant, he was Navigator Officer on the NRP Sagres. He attended the Artillery Officers Specialisation Course in the academic year 89/90, at the Artillery School, after which he was appointed to the First Garrison of the NRP Vasco da Gama, where he served until 1994.
From 1994 to 1996 he was head of the newly created Missile Office at the Artillery School and, in 1996, was called to serve on the NRP Alvares Cabral as Head of the Operations Department. After a two and a half year commission in the Frigate, he returned to the NRP Sagres, this time as Officer in Charge, until 2001.
From 2001 to 2004, he served on the General Staff of the Naval Command Navy to Air Force Liaison Officer. From 2004 to 2006, he held the position of Deputy Director in the Lighthouse Division.
In 2006, he returned to sea once again, this time as Commander of the NTM Creoula, a position he held for four years.
From 2010 to 2012, he headed the Recruitment and Selection office of the Personnel Service Division, after which he had a brief stint with the General Staff of the Armed Forces as head of the Operations and Exercises office of the General Staff of the Joint Operations Centre.
In March 2014, he was invited to be Chief of Staff to the Honourable Admiral Director of the Navy Cultural Commission, a position he held for two years, and has since become a Reservist, in full Service, on 31 December, 2014.
He took up the position of Director of the Navy Planetarium in January 2016.   
As an officer who has spent most of his career on board has over 24500 hours of navigation.
Throughout his career, he received several commendations, having been awarded the 1st and 2nd Class Military Merit Medals, four Naval Cross Medals and a Medal for Exemplary Behaviour - Silver.
Father of a 27-year-old son, Commander Silva Ramos has been involved in sailing as a sport from an early age, having won several national and international titles. He currently sits on the Board of the National Cruise Association, responsible for organising regattas.
Always connected to sports, he regularly practices kite surfing, swimming, running and mountain biking.
